All EU Residence Cards Issued Before August 2021 Expired August 3—Urgent Renewal Required
EU citizens and their non-EU family members holding residence cards (karta pobytu dla obywatela UE) issued on or before August 1, 2021, found their documents invalidated on August 3, 2026, regardless of stated validity period.
Poland completed a mandatory transition to a new unified EU residence card format on August 3, 2026. All older documents—even those stamped as having indefinite or extended validity—were simultaneously invalidated that date as part of European Union harmonization requirements.
This affects two overlapping groups: EU citizens who obtained residence cards in Poland by August 1, 2021, and their non-EU family members (spouses, children, parents) holding derivative residence cards from the same period. Both sets of documents are now legally void.
Practical Impact
- Travel: Holders cannot cross EU borders on expired cards; re-entry bans may apply to non-EU family members
- Employment: Work authorization is no longer valid; employers may face sanctions for employing card holders with expired documents
- Fines: Authorities may issue administrative penalties for staying without current status
- Renewal path: New applications must be filed online via MOS 2.0 portal; processing typically 30–60 days
