The minimum gross annual salary is now €50,700 for standard occupations and €45,934.20 for shortage occupations (2026 figures), compared to the previous threshold of €58,400.
Why this matters
Germany is addressing persistent skilled labor shortages—estimated at approximately 400,000 workers annually—through targeted reforms under the Skilled Immigration Act. The new opportunity card (Chancenkarte) enables third-country nationals to seek employment, and between June 2024 and November 2025, German missions issued 17,489 opportunity cards and 838 visas under the experience pillar.
From January 1, 2026, employers recruiting third-country nationals from abroad must inform employees by their first working day about their right to access free labor and social law counseling services, such as those provided through Fair Integration advisory centers.
For international job seekers: If you hold a degree and earn above the new thresholds, the EU Blue Card is now significantly more accessible. Recent graduates have three years post-graduation to qualify. However, professionals who received their Blue Card in 2025 at the previous salary threshold may find their compensation no longer meets the new requirements when seeking renewal—consult your employment office early to confirm compliance.
