The downpour hit a region particularly vulnerable to flooding—Elbląg sits along the Elbląg river between Druzno lake and the Vistula lagoon, a geography that amplifies flood risk when water levels rise quickly.
Emergency Response and Monitoring
Water levels in the Elbląg river exceeded the warning threshold of 590 centimetres due to a backwater effect in which strong northwesterly winds pushed water from the Vistula lagoon upstream into the river. Emergency services deployed flood barriers in vulnerable areas as authorities monitored water levels at multiple gauges throughout the Elbląg area, all of which exceeded warning thresholds.
Mayor Michał Missan urged residents to exercise caution as the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management warned of sustained strong winds continuing to affect the region.
