Prime Minister Confirms Arson at Drone Plant, Suspects Russian Sabotage
Polish authorities confirmed that a fire at WB Electronics' drone factory in Skarżysko-Kamienna on August 31 was deliberately set, with prosecutors investigating foreign intelligence involvement and terrorism charges.
On September 2, Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that a fire at WB Electronics in Skarżysko-Kamienna, a major Polish defense contractor, was "undoubtedly" an act of sabotage. The fire broke out early on August 31 at the facility, which manufactures unmanned aerial systems (drones) used by Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
Prosecutors launched a terrorism investigation, finding evidence that an incendiary device containing flammable materials had been deliberately planted at the site. CCTV footage captured an unidentified person in a balaclava who entered the premises after climbing a fence. The attack destroyed warehouse facilities and caused damage estimated at approximately 15 million zlotys (€3.5 million).
Key Details
- Suspect: Russian intelligence involvement is widely suspected, though not yet formally confirmed
- Investigation: Prosecutors are investigating "participation in the activities of a foreign intelligence service against the Republic of Poland and for a terrorist offense"
- Timing: The attack occurred amid a broader wave of suspected Russian sabotage across Europe targeting defense suppliers and companies providing arms to Ukraine
WB Electronics is the largest private defense contractor in Poland, and its drones are actively used by Ukrainian armed forces. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński warned that Poland's security services must prepare for an increase in Russian sabotage activities as Moscow escalates its strategy beyond traditional warfare.
If you work in or do business with Polish defense, logistics, or critical infrastructure sectors, stay aware of heightened security protocols. Many facilities have increased surveillance and access restrictions. Expats in the Skarżysko-Kamienna region should expect increased police and military presence as the investigation continues.
