Deutsche Bahn Expands Alcohol Ban to All 5,700 Train Stations Nationwide
Germany's national rail operator has extended a ban on drinking alcohol to all 5,700 Deutsche Bahn stations from October 15, a move intended to improve safety and passenger experience.
Deutsche Bahn has rolled out a comprehensive alcohol consumption ban across its entire network of approximately 5,700 stations, effective October 15, 2026. The ban prohibits open drinking in station concourses and on platforms, though it does not affect bars, restaurants, and other licensed establishments within stations, nor does it prevent passengers from carrying sealed alcoholic beverages in luggage.
The expansion follows successful trials at nearly 40 major stations including Cologne, Munich, and Hamburg. According to Deutsche Bahn spokesperson Anja Bröker, stations where the ban was tested reported fewer conflicts, less trash, and higher passenger satisfaction. A company survey found 80% of travelers supported the measure.
Implementation Details
- Security personnel can intervene when the rule is breached; repeat violations may result in station access bans
- The policy applies to roughly 5,400 stations managed by DB InfraGO and 300 operated by DB RegioNetz
- Passengers can still drink alcohol inside station restaurants and cafés
For expats and regular commuters using German railways, this means a quieter, cleaner station environment overall. If you frequently travel by train or pass through major stations, you'll notice increased enforcement of this rule. Bringing sealed drinks for your journey is still permitted, and purchasing beverages to consume at station restaurants remains unaffected.
