Why These Seats Are Vacant
Candidates will seek to replace former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson — now Canada's ambassador to the European Union — as well as former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and former Conservative MP Richard Martel, who has been appointed to the Senate. The North Vancouver seat has been empty since Wilkinson accepted the role of ambassador to the European Union in April, and the Liberals announced Braeden Caley as their candidate, who most recently served as deputy chief of staff to Carney.
Majority Status at Risk
Carney's Liberal government now holds a slim majority with 172 seats. The outcome of these byelections will be closely watched as an indicator of government stability heading into the final years of the current Parliament.
