A torrential downpour dumped more than 200 millimetres of rain on parts of Cape Breton over the weekend, destroying roads, culverts and bridges while triggering local states of emergency across three counties. The declarations for Inverness, Richmond and Victoria counties were issued Saturday evening after widespread damage, flooded streets, closed roads and washouts across parts of Cape Breton.
The province's Department of Emergency Management said Saturday afternoon that heavy rain damaged dozens of roads in Cape Breton Island and the Eastern Mainland. More than 100 millimetres was recorded in several parts of Cape Breton, including 130mm in Ingonish Beach and 105mm in Sydney.
Power and Travel Disruptions
The storm caused significant infrastructure damage:
- The storm caused widespread power outages in Nova Scotia, with outages peaking near 40,000 customers Saturday afternoon before falling to roughly 7,000 customers Saturday evening.
- Roads and highways throughout Cape Breton and parts of mainland Nova Scotia are washed out, leaving many stranded.
- The ferry service between Wood Islands, P.E.I., and Caribou, N.S., was cancelled for Saturday due to high winds.
