Canada Joins UK-Led Fighter Jet Program as Observer
Canada confirmed on August 7 that it will participate as an observer in the Global Combat Air Programme led by the UK, Italy, and Japan to develop sixth-generation fighter jets by 2035, at no initial cost.
Ottawa's decision to kick the tires on a new, multinational fighter jet program does not come with any sort of price tag, National Defence has confirmed. The Canadian government has signed on to become the first observer of the U.K., Italy and Japan's program to build the next generation of stealth fighter jets by 2035.
What This Means for Canada
While Canada won't have a decision-making role, the move gives them privileged access to the programme and paves the way for discussions on Canada's future participation and contribution. The commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force told CBC News "it's feasible to imagine a world" where Canada becomes a full partner and buys these jets in the future.
The announcement comes as the government is reviewing whether it will go ahead with purchasing its full order of 88 F-35s from the U.S. By joining as an observer now, Canada is positioning itself to evaluate the next generation of fighter technology without immediate financial commitment.
