Bundeswehr Reaches Personnel Target of 186,700 Active Service Members

The German Bundeswehr (Federal Armed Forces) announced on August 19 that it has reached a politically mandated personnel target of at least 186,000 service members, with approximately 186,700 men and women currently active—the highest level in more than a decade.
This achievement comes as Germany implements new recruitment and service policies introduced at the start of 2026. Beginning in January, all 18-year-olds are required to complete a mandatory military questionnaire asking whether they wish to serve for at least six months in the Bundeswehr. While men are required to submit the questionnaire, women and individuals of other genders may do so voluntarily.
The recruitment drive has proven remarkably successful:
- Approximately 96% of young men responded to the questionnaire
- Just over 4% of women and individuals of other genders responded voluntarily
