WWII Bomb Successfully Defused in Berlin-Neukölln After Mass Evacuation
A 100-kilogram unexploded WWII bomb discovered in the Neukölln shipping canal was safely defused late Wednesday after 5,600 households were evacuated, a routine but large-scale operation reflecting Germany's ongoing wartime cleanup.
A 100-kilogram aerial bomb found in Berlin-Neukölln was successfully defused late Wednesday evening, with thousands evacuated from their homes able to return shortly before midnight. The bomb was discovered around 10:40 a.m. during sewer work in the Neukölln Shipping Canal, near the busy Sonnenallee commercial district.
Approximately 5,600 households were evacuated, with the evacuation completed at 21:45 and the disposal operation finished at around 23:10; experts removed the bomb's detonator and then carried out a controlled explosion. The police, fire department, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief, and other organizations were on the scene, with the police alone deploying about 200 officers, while the German Red Cross handled the evacuation of residents.
Frequency of Similar Operations
World War II bombs are still frequently found in Berlin, with several discoveries per year being quite common. Large-scale evacuations are routine; around 6,500 people were evacuated from Potsdam in June 2026 after a 250 kg bomb was found, around 17,000 from Dresden in August 2025, and around 20,000 from central Cologne in June 2025 for similar defusals.
If you live or work in Berlin or any former wartime city in Germany, remain aware that bomb discoveries and evacuation orders can happen with little warning. Keep emergency contact numbers handy and familiarize yourself with local evacuation routes. Most operations conclude successfully within a few hours, but plan accordingly if you live in historic city centers.
