B.C. Declares Emergency as Summerland Wildfire Forces 20,000 to Evacuate

On August 8–10, 2026, the Bald Range wildfire forced an unprecedented mass evacuation across British Columbia's Okanagan region. More than 20,000 residents were forced to evacuate Summerland, population 12,000, and other Okanagan Lake communities overnight as the wildfire destroyed homes in its path. About 8,000 more people were ordered to leave their homes in and around Peachland on the western shore of the lake, and by Saturday evening, the evacuation alert extended to the northern edge of Penticton.

Officials reported unprecedented fire behaviour, with one director noting "We are seeing fuel conditions that we have never seen before. We are seeing fire behaviour and fire growth that we have never experienced in B.C. up until this point." Crews observed sustained 80 km/h winds over the fire and 115 km/h winds at elevation.

The RCMP investigated a possible fatality in the massive fire, with the possible death reported by a resident of Meadow Valley, west of Summerland. As of August 15, residents of more than 2,000 properties have been allowed home after orders were lifted for the Quilpituk Creek fire (which was declared held on Thursday), though orders remain in place for the Summerland fire.
