Alberta votes on separation referendum October 19 with 10 ballot questions
Albertans will vote on October 19, 2026, on ten referendum questions, including whether the province should begin the legal process toward separation from Canada. The vote follows concerns about federal-provincial relations and represents a historic moment for the province's future.
What's Being Asked
Alberta holds a provincewide referendum on Monday, 19 October 2026, asking voters whether the provincial government should begin the constitutional process needed to hold a later binding vote on separation from Canada. Voters will receive 10 separate ballot questions covering Alberta's place in Canada, immigration, access to provincial programs, and proposed changes to the Canadian Constitution.
Question 10 asks voters to choose between Alberta remaining a province of Canada and the Government of Alberta beginning the legal process required to hold a binding referendum on separation. The results of all 10 questions are non-binding.
How to Vote
Advance voting is available from Tuesday, October 13 to Saturday, October 17, 2026. To vote in the referendum you must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old on election day, and ordinarily resident in Alberta. Those are the same eligibility rules Elections Alberta applies to a provincial general election. Permanent residents who are not citizens are not eligible, and neither are Canadians who have moved out of the province.
For Newcomers
If you are a permanent resident or have recently moved to Alberta and hold Alberta residency, you cannot vote in this referendum—only Canadian citizens can participate. The referendum marks a critical moment in Canadian federalism, and observers are closely watching the outcome as it reflects broader tensions between provinces and the federal government.
