ACA Open Enrollment 2027: Mark November 1–December 15, 2026
The annual window to enroll in Affordable Care Act Marketplace plans is shortening. Starting fall 2026, open enrollment runs November 1–December 15 (down from January 15 in prior years), with coverage effective January 1, 2027. Plan changes mean less time to decide.
The ACA Marketplace open enrollment window for 2027 coverage is officially here—but it's shorter than ever. In all states except Idaho, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, open enrollment for 2027 coverage will begin on November 1, 2026. Pick a plan by December 15 and your coverage starts January 1.
This is a significant change. For the last few years, most people had until January 15 to enroll or renew in a Marketplace plan, but starting in 2026, open enrollment will end one month earlier, on December 15 in many states. Starting in 2027, all states will shift to a uniform December 31 deadline—making 2026 your final year with extended January enrollment options.
What This Means for You
- If you miss the December 15 deadline, you won't be able to enroll until the next open enrollment period unless you experience a qualifying life event (marriage, job loss, birth, moving).
- The final deadline is unsettled this year—a court vacated the rule that would have ended enrollment December 15—so the safest plan is simple: don't wait past December 15.
- Different states may have slightly different cutoff dates; check your state's Marketplace after November 1.
As a foreigner settling in the US without employer health coverage, the Marketplace is likely your main route to affordable insurance. If you're newly employed, relocated to the US, or bought a home, these events may qualify you for enrollment outside the main window. But don't rely on it—November 1 to December 15, 2026 is your guaranteed window to sign up for 2027 coverage.
