32 Canadians missing after catastrophic Nepal-Tibet floods; one found
A devastating flash flood along the Himalayan border between Nepal and Tibet has left at least 579 dead and 32 Canadian citizens and permanent residents unaccounted for. The federal government is providing $5 million in emergency relief.
On Wednesday, August 26, a massive flash flood swept through the border region of Nepal and Tibet, destroying villages, bridges, and hydropower projects. The disaster occurred along the Bhote Koshi River basin in Rasuwa District. By Friday, August 29, 32 Canadian citizens and permanent residents were among the nearly 2,000 people missing after the catastrophic flash flood along the Himalayan border between Nepal and Tibet.
One of the 32 Canadian citizens and permanent residents missing in the disaster had been found safely, bringing the total number of Canadians whose whereabouts haven't been confirmed to 31, though this number may still fluctuate as new information comes in. Among those missing are couples from Metro Vancouver who were on spiritual journeys in the region.
Response and Support
Canada announced it was providing $5 million to support emergency relief funds to Nepal. Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 3,742 people have been rescued. The search continues, though Nepalese and Chinese authorities warned of further flooding from a lake that formed upstream after Wednesday's disaster and was already overflowing, urging people in potentially affected areas to move to safer ground.
If you are a Canadian traveller in Nepal or the surrounding region, contact Global Affairs Canada or your nearest Canadian embassy if you have information about missing Canadians or need assistance. Families can reach out to the Government of Canada's emergency response team.
