2026 RRSP and TFSA Limits Rise; Key Deadlines for Spring Filing
Canadian registered account limits for 2026 are now set: RRSP contributions can reach $33,810 (up from $32,490), TFSA room adds $7,000, and the RRSP filing deadline is March 2, 2026. First-time home buyers' FHSA caps remain at $8,000 per year.
The RRSP contribution limit for 2026 has increased to $33,810 from $32,490 in 2025. This is an important number for anyone looking to reduce taxable income before the April 30 filing deadline.
Contribution Room and Deadlines
The amount is calculated as 18 per cent of your previous year's income up to the maximum, plus any unused contribution room carried forward. The deadline for contributions to be in the 2025 tax year is 11:59 p.m. on March 2, 2026, so contributions made by that date will reduce your 2025 taxable income.
As of Jan. 1, adults in Canada can add another $7,000 in contribution space to their tax free savings accounts (TFSAs). That's in line with the $7,000 expansion each year for the past two years, making the total contribution limit for eligible investors who have never contributed to their TFSA since its introduction in 2009 to $109,000.
FHSA (First Home Savings Account) limits are unchanged: $8,000 per year, $40,000 lifetime per eligible first‑time homebuyer.
Practical Notes for Expats and New Residents
If you're newly arrived in Canada, check your Notice of Assessment from the CRA to see your exact RRSP room—it may include carried-forward space from previous years. File early (tax season starts late February) to give yourself time to make an RRSP contribution by March 2 if that helps your tax situation. TFSA room accumulates from age 18 even if you weren't in Canada then; verify your cumulative room in your CRA account. If you own your first home, you're no longer eligible for FHSA contributions—this account is strictly for first-time buyers.
