2026–27 FAFSA Now Open: Simpler Form, New Asset Rules, Foreign Income Changes
The 2026–27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid is now live with significant changes: a shorter form, exclusions for family farms and small businesses from asset calculations, and new rules treating foreign earned income. International students and expat families should note the June 30, 2027 deadline.
What Changed This Year
The FAFSA used to run over 100 questions; the simplified version is closer to 35–40 questions for most families. Most income data is now pulled from your federal tax return via the IRS Direct Data Exchange.
The net worth of small family-owned businesses (with 100 or fewer full-time employees) are now exempt from the SAI calculation, which makes it easier for these families to qualify for aid. Families with foreign income must now include it in their Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) when applying.
Key Financial Aid Updates
For the 2026–2027 academic year, the maximum Pell Grant Award will be $7,395. Families using Parent PLUS loans will now face a $20,000 annual borrowing cap and a $65,000 lifetime borrowing limit per student, meaning families may no longer be able to fully cover remaining tuition balances through Parent PLUS loans alone, especially at higher-cost institutions.
The FAFSA is available in 11 common languages to improve accessibility for English as a Second Language (ESL) students and parents. Many financial aid experts say families will have a smoother experience filling out the 2026-2027 FAFSA. Students and parents are reporting that completing the FAFSA this year is faster and easier than ever, and the financial aid community is hopeful this improved experience will motivate more students to apply.
For newcomer families: If your household includes self-employed parents or family farming operations, the new asset exclusions could significantly improve financial aid eligibility. If any household member earned income abroad (from previous employment or consulting), this must now be disclosed in your AGI—be prepared to gather documentation of foreign earnings. The federal deadline to submit is June 30, 2027, but individual colleges and states have earlier deadlines, so start early. Students with permanent residency or employment authorization can apply; you'll need a Social Security number or Alien Registration number.
